I loved Alberuni's comparison of Brahmagupta with Socrates. It is important to remember though that Socrates was unwilling to compromise (he preferred death to compromise), whereas Brahmagupta was happily compromising scientific truth by mixing Hindu superstition into it. Alberuni says we should forgive Brahmagupta because of his young age when he wrote the words defending hindu superstition and mixing it with scientific truth. Probably Brahmagupta feared physical attacks on him of the kind the modern Gau Rakshaks have been launching on cattle farmers, and it was for this reason that he mixed hindu superstition with scientific truth (to save his skin).
