Progress in eradicating polio
India has just completed a year of no new polio cases reported. A Pakistani newspaper talks about some of the innovative outreach techniques used in India, including getting imams to preach the benefits of the vaccines and issue fatwas in support of the vaccine.

India now gets off the short list of countries where the WHO consider polio endemic, leaving behind Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan. If there are no additional cases over two more years, WHO will consider India "polio free."

Excellent! Thanks for posting this. Fingers crossed for 2 more years. The eradication program coincided with my kids being under 5 yrs of age. On one occasion we were in nainital. It was still very easy to get to the vaccine drops - well coordinated program. A Bachchan campaigned big. where there is a will...

But with the brilliant campaign by anti-vaccine idiot celebrities here in the US, previously eradicated diseases are rearing their ugly heads again.
My best friend didn't vaccinate his child. I was stupefied.
