Our office prefers TOI over The Hindu as TOI readers think CAG is some humour website.

Haha..ok, so The Hindu guys certainly lifted the format from the DNA ad. Only, their version has a far more devastating impact than the original, which is merely cute.

the TOI is not a newspaper. it is definitely the toilet paper of india. once upon a time it used to be a newspaper and had a crossword that beat the pants off of anything the madras mamis used to cook up for the hindu. now it's just a ridiculous tabloid.

Re: Hindu vs ToI: Enjoy
doofus, i saw your post earlier today and quite by accident. you can blame it on the time difference. there has been a lot of posting in the last few weeks and i don't think md checks all threads. at least i am not checking all new threads from overnight these days. activity is like old ch now. credit goes to maria, serfoji and a few others for injecting life into the forums. but i think we india-members did a better job than you nri-members in getting to the bottom of the hindu-TOI war. you nri-members are such a bunch of TOI readers.

well, i asked both my kids and they answered correctly. then they asked me why teller? i said in the old days cash was dispensed by a teller. they were not familiar with the concept so i explained a bit more. then they asked me why those humans were called tellers? i had no answer to that.

The word "teller" comes from the Old English word "tellan." The word
originally had two linked meanings: "to narrate" and "to enumerate,"
both of which convey the idea of putting things in order. The term
"bank teller" is one of the few instances where the second meaning of
the word still exists.

in the old days, toi's crossword was not original; it was a reproduction of the (london) times crossword.MaxEntropy_Man wrote:the TOI is not a newspaper. it is definitely the toilet paper of india. once upon a time it used to be a newspaper and had a crossword that beat the pants off of anything the madras mamis used to cook up for the hindu. now it's just a ridiculous tabloid.

Most of the times, great works are unearthed and recognized only because of the imitators.
Sort of like Ritchie and Steve.

There is always a market for tabloids. ToI would be Murdoch's dream buy.

Re: Hindu vs ToI: Enjoy
as usual Maxx has hyperboled
.toilet paper indeed
The Times is still revered and is one of the most subscribed for newspaper in India
.Now if urchins use it to squat down on along the highways of Mumbai for hours at a time .its nobodys fault
Perhaps they are will have finished reading it before Momma comes to wash them off
ha ha
I used to love Vir Sanghvi from the Hindustan times.... who also had a bollywood star interview show
is he still the editor ?

Most subscribed yes (and only becoz ToI is just a powerful sales and marketing organization whose product is advertising space, the editorial content being incidental). Still revered, not at all.

Re: Hindu vs ToI: Enjoy
Isn't TOI responsible for spreading 'Paid news' trend? My impression is it fell from grace a decade ago.
Vir sangvi's name came up on some of the tapes that involved Ratan Tata. What ever happened to that case?
