Global Hunger Index: India ranks behind Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka
India ranks a low 100th out of 119 countries on the Global Hunger Index (GHI) released Thursday. On the GHI severity scale, India is at the high end of the “serious” category, owing mainly to the fact that one in every five children under age 5 is “wasted” (low weight for height).
With 21% of under-5 children suffering from wasting, the report notes, India is one of the very few countries that have made no strides over the last 25 years in checking the prevalence of this indicator. Only three other countries in GHI 2017 — Djibouti, Sri Lanka, and South Sudan — have a child-wasting prevalence over 20%.
Child wasting is one of four indicators in the GHI. In India, it has increased in India from 17.1% in 1998-02 to 21% in 2012-16. This is way above the global prevalence: 9.5% of all under-5 children suffer from wasting.

Re: Global Hunger Index: India ranks behind Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka
New Delhi: India has a “serious” hunger problem and ranks 100 among 119 developing countries, lagging behind countries such as North Korea and Iraq, said the global hunger index report released by Washington-based International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) on Thursday.
With a global hunger index (GHI) score of 31.4, India is at the high end of the “serious” category, the report said, adding, “given that three quarters of South Asia’s population reside in India, the situation in that country strongly influences South Asia’s regional score.”
India’s poor performance brings to the fore the disturbing reality of the country’s stubbornly high proportions of malnourished children—more than one-fifth of Indian children under five weigh too little for their height and over a third are too short for their age, IFPRI said in a statement.
Data from the report showed that India’s rank (100) was lower than all its neighbours—Nepal (72), Myanmar (77), Bangladesh (88), Sri Lanka (84) and China (29)—except Pakistan (106). Even North Korea (93) and Iraq (78) fared better in hunger parameters and GHI rankings, the report.
The report further said that India’s poor score is one of the main factors pushing South Asia to the category of the worst performing region on the GHI scale this year.

>>> What a silly statement and analysis above!
Even though the three quarters of South Asia's population reside in India, India does not have the three quarters of the land of South Asia and the natural resources of South Asia, but considerably less. Naturally, that should explain the reason for more hungry people in India -- due to overpopulation and not because of India is a backward country and other South Asian countries are more progressed.
