The All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Thursday confirmed that former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has passed away. Vajpayee breathed his last at 5:05 pm. One of India's most charismatic leaders, Vajpayee died following the prolonged illness. He was 93.

Both in 90s, but what an amazing, ultimate contrast, between Karunanidhi and Vajpai, I must say!

seeing parallels. both born in 1924. both into literature and writing. both became activists at an early age. And while one was on tamil agenda, another was on hindi agenda, you can say? But one of them had to explain his caste, etc and rebelled out of it, and the other didn't feel apologetic about it. And yeah, one of them married enough # of times for both of them and was more into state agendas. The other didn't get into the trappings of corruption that comes after having kids, and was more into national agendas.

Caste is diversity, presenting innovative variations and design, in lifestyle including food and many other aspects of culture. like millions of different kinds of flowers - together, they make a beautiful garland. the major vulnerability is claiming superiority. From this POV, Vajpayee is justified in being unapologetic, IMO

I still remember the election slogan "Bari Bari sabki Bari, abki Bari Atal Bihari" from way back when. Vajpayee did achieve this a few years later. He had a unique way of speaking and charming audiences. I remember an interview where he was asked "what is your strength and what is your weakness?". Vajpayee replied that in 50 years of public life he never hit any opponent below the belt and this can be considered his biggest strength as well as his biggest weakness. He seemed like a classy, dreamy idealist - perhaps a deliberately played good cop role to go hand in glove with Advani's tough guy role.
