Baijnath (H.P.) villagers construct bridge on their own, after Govt. inaction
Palampur, H.P., September 6, 2019
Residents of Jamrela village in Baijnath have constructed a bridge on their own. They took the step after the state government failed to come to their rescue despite repeated pleas.
A bridge over the local river was washed away in the last rainy season, making it difficult for the villagers to send their wards to school, visit fair price shops at Baijnath and rush ailing persons to hospitals. The villagers in the past one year visited all district and sub-divisional authorities, local MLAs and even raised the issue during the Jan Manch, but to no avail.
Though the Baijnath SDM visited the village a number of times and assured them that the bridge would be constructed, nothing was done.
Finally, the villagers decided to construct the bridge on their own. Youths called a meeting of residents and collected money. Even the poor contributed. Village panchayat representatives Anup Kumar, Tulsi Ram Man Singh, Kishoril Lal, Vipan, Ram Krishan and Subhash said the total cost of the steel bridge was Rs 2.5 lakh.
They said some residents raised loans to contribute. They said in the beginning, it was a difficult task as most of the villagers were daily wagers. The residents are fed up with the false promises made by the local MLA and state officials. They regretted that despite panchayats getting funds in crores, the government had failed to sanction funds for the bridge, though they submitted estimates and resolutions a number of times.
