why is america moving more to the right?
fascinating article and data points:
http://m.theatlanticcities.com/politics/2012/02/why-america-keeps-getting-more-conservative/1162/
• Conservative states are considerably more religious than liberal-leaning states. And, this correlation between religion is increasing
• Conservative states are also less educated than liberal ones; This correlation between conservative affiliation and education (percent of adults who are college graduates) is also substantially higher than before.
• States with more conservatives are less diverse.
• Conservative political affiliation is highly negatively correlated with the percent of the population that are immigrants or gay and lesbian.
• There is no correlation to race or ethnicity, however, whether measured as percent white, percent black, or percent Hispanic (Fascinating).
• Conservative political affiliation is strongly correlated with percentage of a state’s workforce in blue-collar occupations;
• Conservative political affiliation is highly negatively correlated with proportion of workforce engaged in knowledge-based professional and creative work.
• States with more conservatives are considerably less affluent than those with more liberals.
• Conservative political affiliation is highly negatively correlated with state income levels and even more so with average hourly earnings.

didnt know only news and analysis that you havent seen before are fit for posting. the reason this is interesting to me is in the past americans veered to the left during financial and economic crisis in the past.

i'll give you a better summary: the leaning to the right is because the republicans in the top 0.01% have been getting politicians to feed religion to the bottom feeders so they'll continue to vote against their own self interests.

1) there is a very good summary of who the top democratic donors are: they are the wealthiest of the wealthy. so enough numbers of 0.01% are democrats are not "feeding religion to the bottom feeders" as you so eloquently described the working poor that presumably side with republicans.
2) overwhelming majority of the eloquently described bottom feeders are democrats. infact a huge chunk of the lazy welfare recipients, perennial victims and unionized professional lazies are overwhelmingly democrat.
3) catholics, who are among the most conservative of all are overwhelmingly democrats.
dont let facts get in the way.

Historically, nations usually veer to the right during financial distress. Religion, nationalism, xenophobia, racial biases, etc. are all more attractive to people when they are unhappy with their lot and need to find explanations for "good, hardworking folks" like themselves not making a decent living while others at a distance get by fine.Propagandhi711 wrote:the reason this is interesting to me is in the past americans veered to the left during financial and economic crisis in the past.
When the last crisis of this proportion broke in 1929, most European countries lurched to the right. The reason America took a different path is FDR and his Keynesian policies. FDR's policies helped unions thrive, and that moved the lower middle-class en masse to the Democratic party. FDR got elected in 1932 not because America moved to the left, but because people were fed up of the horrible economy and wanted to boot out the ruling party. He took advantage of that, and chose to go big and alter the political landscape for the long term. FDR's gamble paid off, thanks in part to WWII. Obama seized the chance in 2009 and made a similar gamble with his healthcare law, but didn't go as far. Time will tell if his gamble pays off.
