".. Those of us, who lived in his times, he was our political icon.History may judge him differently by the advantage of hind-sight. But for us, the political situation prevailing then - Master Tara Singh with his ferocious demand for Punjabi Subha in the North, Periyar for Dravidastan in the south, Potti Sri Ramulu fasting unto death for a separate Andhra , the idea of a nation for which Indians struggled for centuries was put on chopping block. On the political side, the Praja socialists, were pulling to put the country on the bullock cart age while, Ramamurthy and Sundarayya along with Namboodripad desired to drive on the Marxist-Leninist route. Nagi Reddy was an ardent mentor for later Naxalites. Sheik Abdulla was blowing hot and cold with secessionism and self rule.A.N.Phizo impelled by the Presbyterian Church desired a separate Nagaland and the wild seeds of separatism was liberally down.Rajaji wanted  supported by the zamindars and Rajas who lost their throne confronted him with a laissezfare economy of the western model.

"35 crore Indians were to be fed and clothed with wheat and grains in short supply. Balance of payments was in doldrums. We lived in the grace of PL-480 of American grace. A scientific era had to be ushered in an orthodox, conventional an obscurantist population.

"You have forgotten the the establishment of the Atomic energy research , ICAR, Steel plants, IITs, and Aeronautical factories,HMT,BEL,ITI, BHEL, and many more under his auspices, that later contributed the industrial advancement of India . The green revolution, the milk revolution and the educational advancement was reaped in harvest later because of those innovative , long sighted plans he initiated. C.Subramaniam, M.Swaminathan, Homi Bhaba, besides Kurien derived great support for their unfettered execution is not to be forgotten.....  "

The undermining of Nehru's policies and plans as P.M. were not just the result of Pakistan causing problems in Kashmir, China in NEFA and Leh / Ladhakh and some states' opposing politicians putting their own (personal & provincial) interests ahead of national interests, as elaborated in the above by Krishnan Bala.

Nehru, in addition,  had many national and provincial leaders and politicians (including some MPs,  CMs, MLAs, ministers etc.) and their families, who, while officially affiliated politically with his own party (Congress), sometimes undermined his policies and plans and brought much negativity and disrepute to his name (as Congress's head nationally and as P.M.) while they (politicians and their families) engaged in rampant corruption and acted recklessly (often breaking the law in public matters and against people).
