nikhil banerjee Empty nikhil banerjee

i meant to post this a while ago, but keep forgetting. i know there are a few carnatic music fans here, but don't know if there are any hindustani music fans. nikhil banerjee is THE reason i got hooked to hindustani music. i know for westerners indian music always equates to ravi shankar and i sort of started there too, but in my opinion hindustani music has not seen the equivalent of nikhil banerjee and is unilikely to do so for a long time to come. he learned from the same guru as ravi shankar and ali akbar khan the great sarodiya, namely, ali akbar's father baba allaudin khan the granddaddy of the maihar gharana. he was baba allaudin's final student.

NB's music has the power to move me to tears, so i don't listen to it ever as background music. i give him my fullest attention on the rare occasions when i listen to him. listening to him is never a parallel activity. i have a lot of his music, many bootlegged concerts amongst them. recently i was thrilled to discover that there are some full length concerts of his on youtube that i've never heard before.

here is a jog kauns (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-DAcWJuEkU&feature=related).

and here is his last ever concert (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EK0yJoYwbAs). he died two days after this concert.
