A welcome slap in the face
That's the title for the Economist's story on the recent state elections in India, referring to the defeat the Congress suffered. Good article...
India’s state elections
A welcome slap in the face
After India’s equivalent of mid-term elections, prospects dim for Congress and economic reform. But Indian democracy is in rude health
Mar 10th 2012 | DELHI | from the print edition
IF HE had any other surname, Rahul Gandhi, commonly mentioned as a prime minister-in-waiting, would surely be pondering a new career. His ill-starred record as a political campaigner reached a new low on March 6th, when he accepted the blame for his party’s dreadful showing in assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh (UP). Congress won only 28 of the 403 seats in India’s largest state (population 200m), up just six from the 2007 poll.
Mr Gandhi must regret his personal effort, which he grandly dubbed “Mission 2012” (he campaigned full-time, with lavish funds, for over a year). He spurned an offer to join Manmohan Singh’s government in Delhi. Instead he picked gargantuan UP, the old family fief, hoping that success there would compensate for Congress’s fading fortunes in another big state, Andhra Pradesh. His sister, Priyanka Gandhi, joined him in the campaign, urging voters to stay loyal to the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty. They ignored her.

Another Slave of Nehru-Gandhai clan? Already Vadra wants power and expect a downhill for the clan from now on.
MT Sonia should take her 4 Bill and settle down in Italy.

Upps,
I' m just taken up with her resemblance to the grand old lady Indira Gandhi.
and that's probably why the Indian people keep electing this family into power ..

These are the dynasties I can think of right now.
TN: The many offsprings of Karunanidhi. Jayalalitha cut off the Ramachandran line.
Karnataka: The Gowdas.
Kerala: Karaunakaran and his offsprings.
Andhra: The yuvaraj reddy. The naidu-rama rao family.
Maharasta: Pawar-Sule. The many versions of Thackerays. The Chavans, the deshmukhs and many many more.
UP: Mulayam-akhilesh. charan singh - Ajit singh.
MP/ChattishgarhRajasthan: The Shuklas. The tribe of Arjun Singh. The Schindias. Pilots.
Bihar: Lalu-Rabri. There were other families (like Azad, sinhas etc but probably not as prominent).
Sikkim: The Bhandaris.
Haryana: The chautalas/lals.
Punjab: Badals
Meghalaya: Sangmas.
Orissa: Patnaiks.
J & K : Sayeeds, Abdullahs.
This is just a quick list and by no means a complete one.

Dynastic succession is here to stay in Indian politics. But few dynasties have the longevity that the Nehru-Gandhi clan has shown. I guess the Abdullah dynasty comes close, but that one has had three generations so far, not four.artood2 wrote:These are the dynasties I can think of right now.
