One of the quirks about him was he would never play for a female artist - with only one exception. He played out of compulsion and courtesy for D. K. Pattammal another great carnautic musician bcz her son was married to mani Iyer's daughter.

I will be surprised and would like to see some evidence contrary to my belief.

Aside.... the following from a site on MSS:

Concert at Sri Dakshinamurthy's household wedding

"Kunjamma (as she is known to those close to her), brought up with all the rigorous strictness that her mother could impose upon her training in art as in life, had sung at a wedding in the household of Dakshinamurti Pillai, the venerable percussionist from Pudukkottai. The event had drawn a galaxy of artists - including the upcoming Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, Musiri Subramania Iyer, Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar, Rajamanickam Pillai, Rajaratnam Pillai, Palghat Mani Iyer, G.N. Balasubramanian and the Alathur brothers.

The next day, in the midst of this starry assembly, Dakshinamurti Pillai suddenly smote his head with vehemence. "Andavane!" (oh God!) How will you save your throats for a lifetime if you engage in vocal gymnastics? Leave all that to us drummers. Singers must emphasise the raga and the bhava so that you preserve your voice and let it gain in timbre. That little girl there, she knows this already. Didn't we hear her yesterday? Wasn't it satisfying? Touch our hearts?"" At that public praise, Kunjamma shrank even more behind her mother in the corner. "
******

OMG... what a galaxy of stars.... It is akin to see the world's top 10 richest people, 10 nobel laureates at someone's wedding.

Ellaarum ippidi O pOttA eppidi.. Palghat mani was a thunderous wild raw blaster ..hardly any finesse..that is further stoked by Chemmangudi saying 'kotrA kotrA' - Palghat mani played loud paramOLam, at the best.. never allowed innovations among his sishyans.. ask Umayalpuram SivaRaman who was one..and rightly parted ways to become a deserving legend..Mani's paramOLam and MSS' wailing ( again due to her unfortunate apprenticeship with Chemmangudi ) would be a matchless match.. horror horror horror what a nightmare..guys..please..

TK murthy I believe, has many anecdotes about the kind of dirty whispers among the accompaniments on stage when Bangalore ramani AmmaL or MSS and such female artists used to sing - basically bigtime joLLu.. artists' looks were big assets to females and also occasionally to males -GNB unfortunately an inadvertent victim, in spite of his great talent, again from what I hear.
