Huzefa Kapasi's movie review -- Ekk Deewana Tha
konkanastha brahmin, maharashtrian boy from mumbai falls in love with syrian christian, malayali girl, bred in mumbai, with parents hailing from alleppey. ouchhhhhhhhhhhhhhieeeeee!* (thank god it's only a film.)
just watched an hour of it. review tomorrow or day after. the girl's role is played by amy jackson, a brit, i just checked, and who is in dating prateik babbar, the hero of this flick, in real life. did not read any further in wikipedia 'cos. of spoilers.
* so cute na?

This is a remake of a Tamil/Telugu movie made by the same director. In Tamil it was called Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaaya (Will you cross the skies and come for me). Pretty decent movie with outstanding sound track by AR Rahman. Heard that the Hindi version was ruined by casting Amy Jackson. Heard it was mega flop in Hindi.

thanks DM. the plot should be interesting -- this is for granted. frankly i am enjoying the performances of prateik babbar (is he son of raj babbar?) and amy so far and even the songs (thought not composed by rahman)! this flick reminds me a bit of nayee padosan (which wasn't a hit but i loved it) but the plot might change suddenly -- i'm only, frankly, 45 mins. into it. might go back to it right now.

why does bollywood use a british beauty to play a syrian christian girl? could that be because there are no northern indian girls who are good-looking enough to fill that role? ouchhhhhhhhhhieeeeee!Huzefa Kapasi wrote:konkanastha brahmin, maharashtrian boy from mumbai falls in love with syrian christian, malayali girl, bred in mumbai, with parents hailing from alleppey. ouchhhhhhhhhhhhhhieeeeee!* (thank god it's only a film.)

* it's unnecessary to say "syrian christian, malayali"; all syrian christians are malayalis.

I don't remember who this girl is. I think they cast her for a Syrian Christian girl's role because Bollywood casting agents are effing idiots.

OMG! this film is not about mallu tallu or konkanastha fonkanastha synthesis. it is about love. verdict 9/10. ok make that 8/10 were it not for the...*spoiler alert*
...last one hour. it should have ended on a devdas note. it could not have made this flop film more floppy. i was wrong -- the musical score was by a r rahman and the lyrics weaved between hindi and malyali. and, omg, i found the song i was searching for for the last 3 months (without success) in a hindi version: http://www.saavn.com/popup/psong-1djYmzIf.html
i am sure i heard some chants that were probably in aramaic in a church wedding in a scene in the movie. full marks for authenticity!
