The New York Times reports that Strauss-Kahn is a former economics professor, and started in the 1980's as a deputy in parliament, and then was a finance minister:

i would have believed it if he hadn't run away from the hotel in a big rush to get on the earliest plane to paris.

Sure it will have a political fall out and he may be even out politically. time will tell.
But, it if this had happened in france, one can suspect a conspiracy.
Imagine such an swift action against a bigwig happening in India - an Indian, Arab, or a foreigner. The difference between a developed and a backward nation.
