Stalinist purge killed most of them. Picture tells a thousand words.
Trotsky was murdered in Mexico by a Russian agent with an ice pick.

Two key takeaways:
1. Smile; it helps you win.
2. Stalin was a great leader. All these guys who got shot and murdered in other ways must have resisted his attempts to make the Soviet Union a great power. Notice the few guys who died of natural causes? That's your proof that Stalin did not go after them. Also, I think the Soviet Union made some good films -- shows that Stalin was a patron of the arts. The fact that the Soviet Union became a superpower under his leadership makes me greatly admire Stalin. I will be doing further research and posting laudatory posts about Josef.

one really interesting fact about 1917 Russia--to me at least--was that there was an american medical student who was a student of Pavlov* at that time. i forget his name now.

stalin also nearly did away with lev landau nobelist and one of the leading lights of 20th century physics. he threw landau in prison. if not for the interference of peter kapitsa, landau would have been history.

Could it be possible that Landau did something to attract Stalin's ire? I am ready to furnish links that millions upon millions of Russians survived Stalin's purges without Pyotr Kapitsa's intervention, you know!

yes amongst other things, lev landau was the co-discoverer of the density matrix method in QM and also solved some long standing problems in critical point phenomena and phase transitions. and he was a jew. not sure if stalin also had a thing for jews like adolf.

The only doctor/person I could think of..looking at these men, and none of them are nearly handsome or charming as him..was the the great Russian- Dr. Zhivago:)! *good casting!

Seriously, this thread brought back memories of the movie.
Carvaka and others,

If you are interested about that era- Russian Revolution..try to watch it..well made/told historical movie..intertwined with a nice fictional story- with some great love scenes.

Rashmun,

The American Physician you mentioned is Dr. Horseley Grant..who won the Nobel Prize for Medicine and was the founder of Pavlonian Society at John Hopkins.

Well, the British director thought that the goodlooking Egyptian could portray the Russian brilliantly..and apparently he could:)

No different from a beautiful American playing an Egyptian Queen quite magnificiently as well!

I like Omar's sparkling eyes.. Elizabeth's eyes were something too!

*Nice to know you liked the movie Carvaka.

Dr. Zhivago is a great movie. Tad slow for today's standards. But the cinematography and beautiful landscape make it impossible to resist.
