This is a new thing for the last 10 years. This Maharashtrian habit was never practiced publicly in TN or Madras. Looks like these days, huge Ganesha Idols are now taken in a procession and immersed in the Bay of Bengal. Of course, a couple of days from now, there will be pictures of disfigured idols washing ashore.

Why this (new) Kolaveri ?

Bay of bengal is big enough to.accept this idols for few more years. In hyd they dump them in a relatively small lake called hussain sagar in heart of busy city. That lake was dredged few times to remove the remains of statue and other pollution material
.one positive development is the change in material, more mud and lime stone and less cement and metals.
