english vinglish *long rambling review*
I LOVE SRIDEVI'S NEW NOSE!!!! (to do something different and abnormal is a psychic necessity of artists -- g v desani.)
all through school, i was an avid reader of stardust and cine blitz (those were the classics of literature i read... also india today, i weekly and imprint... in college, among periodicals, i'd continue reading only india today that my father faithfully shipped every week and i would add EPW and granta to it). when i was class 7 or 8 (12/13 yrs old), stardust was actively promoting sridevi as a new sensation and warning us that she would rule the movies of future and hosting bikini clad images of hers. often i wrote letters to the editor when emotional without caring if they were ever read but some were. to stardust, i angrily wrote, "oh no, invasion of cinema by baby-faced walruses..." sridevi looked pudgy in a bikini in the pics stardust had carried. it was a perfectly natural outburst. i was pudgy and babyfaced then and i hated myself (it would change in class 11 when i would gain height but i would never stop hating myself). horror of horrors, stardust carried my letter in its "letters to the editor" page. i forgot sridevi after that. but today i was reminded of that letter while watching this movie. this new nose had transformed the baby-face. her entire face looked beautiful now. this is a tribute to cosmetic surgery! it was time to burn that letter i felt. i quickly returned to the movie after having absorbed her beauty.
sridevi is such a splendid actress. i never realized this. she is a natural. her slight expressions (in her scalped self) carry feelings that words cannot express. she renders the most convincing performance of a woman tortured by her lack of fluency in english and the shame, the humiliation that it brings her. she looks cute and the film too is cute. big B is also in it. i am an hour into the film... let me get back to it.

lol, i did not know they were still in print. my younger brother decided to make his son read comics because he would not read. so dad and son went shopping and they bought old, used copies of tintin, asterix and archies in free school street that have "used books" stores and his experiment was a success.Impedimenta wrote:OMG @ stardust. i still secretly buy a copy from the indian store:-)
nope! she looks more beautiful now and her nose looks abs. fine. actually she always was beautiful with those alluring eyes but my first impression of hers (which is often the last impression) was that she is fat and it stuck.come on! her nose is terrible now. in the movie, she looked like she had more work done than michael jackson:-) decent movie and a great performance though.

Here she is- 6 years old and cute (even as a boy!):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Th9bUtTIRGY
Here she is - 15 years old in the classic movie "16 vayathineley" ..and cute.."perfect".. for the role.."Mayil"..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMLnX3qST9I
Here she is at 18..cute-and "homely/timid"..but like a good Indian woman (!) appearances can be decieving..really progressive and bold "proposing" to Rajini putting pressure with all that soft feminine power:).. expressive..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SO8O5qInUsk&feature=related
Think I have looked up enough links to see her evolution- and there was progression in stages..personally and professionally..
And am sure..she is lovely and cute in English Vinglish..the evolution continues..If I am around, would like to see her in her 70s..think she will still be cute as a Grandame-diva too!

i liked the second link -- very beautiful she looks in it.
i always found her shrill voice a trifle annoying but i notice the shrillness gone in english vinglish. the silver screen has documented her evolution, you are quite right, for there are very few actresses like her who have been involved with movies starting from being a child artiste to doing character roles in their sunset.
aside: father john, a malayalee and a teacher of english and principal in st. something convent in mumbai, in the movie, informs sridevi that hindi hamari rashtriya bhasha hai na, na, meaning hindi is our national language. now father john is phd from kerala. he cannot say anything wrong. so people, please do not forget. circulate the message that hindi is our national language and please speak in hindi as far and frequently as possible. jai hindi!

All these kishtianboys from Kerala are like that wonly. Forever trying to ingratiate themselves with some dominant group or the other. Even Vee "Wannabeiyer" Unkil, for all his diatribes against Northindians, had his children tutored in Hindi - not Thamizh, mind you - by someone holding a Ph.D in Hindi.

Sridevi today: nose job, and cosmetic dental work. Her teeth look more like dentures in English Vinglish. At almost 50 with 2 kids she is in top shape. Move was OK, not the best for Sridevi.
