White Mughals by William Dalrymple
Just finished reading this awesome book. What a saga... in the midst of all the intrigue and Hyderabadi court politics of the early 19th century, there is an amazing love story (featuring haha..Anglo-Hyderabadi integration) that ends, like all love stories, in tragedy and betrayal.
Hats off to William Dalrymple for how teases out this story from volumes of personal correspondence, wills and third party accounts and then puts it all together into one moving, yet historically sound narrative.

Oh no no. All real. That's why I'm in awe of Dalrymple's research.
Amazing how a real life story that played out 200 years ago reads like a Bollywoodish potboiler: a dashing British diplomat who immerses himself into the late-Mughal culture of the Nizam's court, a willful teenage beauty from a noble family who falls for him, her mother and grandmother who defy the menfolk to support the romance, married bliss, politics, tragedy, a second dalliance, betrayal and to give it that truly Bollywoodish over-the-top flavor, a powerful, villainous character who contracts leprosy but makes life miserable for the heroine.

Haha..I've not said anything (other than about the leprous villain) that is not already there on the blurb.

Oh that's another awesome book. My understanding of the Sepoy Mutiny (that Nationalists call the First War of Independence) underwent a sea change after reading this. Dalrymple is very sympathetic to the rebels and is yet very factual in terms of military strategies, what worked, what failed. One can't help feel sorry for BSZ, that reluctant "emperor" who was in reality at the mercy of people and events way beyond his control.
