we have talked about cross pollination of musical ideas between the two genres of indian classical music a little on these pages the last couple of days. but there are actually VERY few instances of someone trained in one genre also mastering (not dabbling in) the other. and of the examples that exist, it is always the case of a southern indian trained in CM becoming proficient in HM later. MSG in my opinion is unparalleled in this regard. his comfort zone in HM was equal to that of his CM playing. he happens to be both my favorite CM and HM violinist. an amazing artiste who passed away very recently.

here is MSG's ahir bhairav in two parts:

talk is cheap. i mean people imagining what nobody has claimed, i.e. that carnatic music belongs only to southern indians. AFAIK, nobody has said that. but the fact of the matter is the only examples of people mastering a musical genre into which they were not born are southern indians mastering HM.

in fact the only example of a non southern indian taking an interest and mastering CM is jon higgins.
