Also, can you take deductions for pet medical and dental care?

Ya that's what I'm doing. She asks me to get dozens of information. Compared to years until now when I simply hovered around. This is a nightmare!

These things take a little time to sort out. I would say you file for an extension (you get two months) and sort these things out with your accountant. btw, when you file for an extension you do have to send a check to IRS for you "expect" to owe.

Don't hire a desi CPA - they don't respond to you once they get paid and be ready to proof read the documents they prepare. This time we were very happy that we are getting a refund and I pointed to the H there were an additional ZERO in two places.

Go to US based Liberty or such and have peace of mind. In some community they offer free services...just saying.,

Do a quickie tax and file for extension WITH ANY PAYMENT if shown. Then you have until Oct 15 to leisurely do the taxes.

I suggest that you buy TurboTax Premium (for no reason and to cover all bases) and simply do what the program asks... That is the first thing I would suggest for a first timer.

Even if you go to a CPA, it is nto a bad idea to "know" something about this annual tournament.

I am using HR people. Once I understand it, maybe next year I will tackle it by myself.

HR people? Those are mostly people like you and me trained for 2 weeks and let loose on the unsuspecting public. They are good for simple cases for most common people. In your case and that too, this year, you need someone more versatile.
