Another self-pity party
Sorry to rehash the same sorrow all over again but I feel so miserable in this place overall. All I do is:
1. Sleep in until whatever time I feel like waking up
2. Feed the dogs and chickens, change their water
3. Walk the dogs to the neighbor's house, let them play with their dogs for 10-15 minutes and walk them back.
4. Make lunch and dinner, and clean the house, vacuum, mop floors, dust, clean kitchen, clean bathrooms, do the laundry, do some gardening
5. Sit on the porch and read, listen to music, lift weights, gossip with the local cop (the one bright spot in my day, if he stops by at all)
6. Drive to the nearest city for groceries, to get cars serviced, to the vet, to shop at the mall (and I don't even need the nice outfits I buy because most of the time, all I wear is jeans and a tank top in the middle of nowhere).
7. Browse the local Topix forum and FB
8. Wait for DH to come home
I didn't get two degrees to do nothing all day. I could probably do this homemaker thing all day in a city where I could go socialize with friends over lunch. But there's no one here of my demographic. Someone young, educated, without four or more kids, not Christian evangelical, and with similar interests. It could be white, black, Indian, Asian, but someone young, educated, not running a convenience store or raising chickens for a living. Just browsed FB and everyone who lives here praises God at least once a day ("God is so good," "Praise The Lord," "I love you, Baby Jesus," "El Elyon-God Most High"). I am spiritual but this is ridiculous! It's almost like they have a competition going on to see who loves God more.
I know, another self-pity party, but what else is there to do here.

I am not going to leave my husband. There's nothing wrong with him. It's just where we live. I just wish the places we want to live in weren't so over saturated with specialists.

people make enormous sacrifices to find fulfillment in work and personal life. it's difficult to find sympathy for your cushy existence other than to encourage you to find something meaningful to do with your life. your problem is that you like the financially carefree existence your husband provides but are unwilling make the sacrifice of trading that for a sterile life.

I just don't know how much longer I can take this place but DH won't move back to a city or suburb to make less than $200K after 15 years of post-high school education and $300K in student loans (which he's finally paid off).

I have zero interest in the cop. He's just a welcome distraction from the sheer boredom of my pointless existence.

I thought you made peace with your life. But, looks like you didn't. Sigh!
MS, many would be happy to trade their lives with yours. It's a pretty peaceful, simple, tranquil and serene life. Enjoy it!

I used to work when he was in training. I bought my own house, now worth $200K, and paid it off before getting married. I wasn't going to use that to pay off his loans. Now that he's paid off his student loans, I'm okay with him taking a 50% pay cut but he's not ready to take a pay cut, so I can start working.

So have no worries. When(ever) it happens, you can convince yourself it just happened and be at peace.

I would love to join you for lunch! At a Whole Foods' hot lunch bar. Or for idli-dosa. Or sushi and miso soup. Or Thai curry. Or even an egg salad sandwich at Starbucks. I have none of these options where I am right now. I've learned to become a phenomenal cook thanks to the lack of food choices around me. I even own a sushi mat now.

Well, if we move back to civilization, the most he'll make is half of what he makes right now. But, then I could find a job, right? I won't be making enough money to recoup his pay cut but it'll be a better quality of life.

really? in the US of A, there is a place where a desi has not started up a idli-dosa shop? nah, not possible babe. even in the middle of the desert in arizona, there has to be a chaat house or idli-dosa place and people there will fight over "dosa-dosai" terminology!mainstreet wrote:I would love to join you for lunch! Re: Another self-pity party
The equation:
Your DH: $$ and rural life vs paycut and urban/suburban life, $$ and rural life wins
You: jigneses of the world vs DH, DH wins.
Your option: make peace with rural life coz rural life is way more tolerable than the jigneses of the world

DH is not a huge fan of rural life, but it doesn't seem to bother him as much as it bothers me. Yes, thank you for that logic, Kinnera.

Khabardaar! Don't say a word abt Georgia, any part of it. It's the best place on earth (next best to California of the 90s).Marathadi-Saamiyaar wrote:You know by all your description - looks like you are stuck in Southern Georgia.mainstreet wrote:I would love to join you for lunch! Re: Another self-pity party
There is no Indian food, period within 60 miles of this place. No sushi. No Thai food. No Starbucks. No grocery store other than Piggly Wiggly which is mostly canned food. No gourmet food. There is talk of an Olive Garden coming to town but I don't eat at chains like Olive Garden. It would be nice if there was a real authentic Italian place nearby that served duck confit and panna cotta like in NYC.

Best place on earth is all relative. If you've lived in NYC, Chi-town, Philly, and D.C., a small one-horse town in the Deep South isn't going to cut it for very long.

you have a unique vantage point -- an indian american woman looking at life in the deep south. why don't you try your hand at writing fiction based in your current surroundings?

Re: Another self-pity party
Yeah, thanks for the encouragement about the book idea, but how many people want to read a book about Billy Bob and Mary Beth? There's just so many pages I can fill up with descriptions of dilapidated, run-down country houses with backyard chickens, beautiful tall pine trees everywhere, one place to get coffee and breakfast in town, no vegetarian or ethnic options anywhere, 99.9% of the population is uneducated, obese, smokes, doesn't put a collar on their dog. Rampant crime, food stamp fraud, and welfare abuse by baby factories. It's sad, and I would sound condescending. I'm not about to insult the people of this town by writing a book about them.

a book is a bad idea. there are so many more useful things to do. maybe you can be like the girl in eat drink man woman, i love those scenes where she's cooking. and you can have a food-cooking blog, interspersed with tales of welfare-fraud people and other people who're sucking up our tax money. this combination would would really be interesting to me. and other people will follow suit just cuz it's you.mainstreet wrote:Yeah, thanks for the encouragement about the book idea, but how many people want to read a book about Billy Bob and Mary Beth? Re: Another self-pity party
so I got thinking about food and I watched all the food excerpts from eat drink man woman on youtube. of course, after that one begins to crave Chinese and I went ahead ordered food from a top-ranked local schezuan kitchen. I got the thin rice noodles with cabbage, snow peas, water chestnuts, bean curd, and mushrooms which I had with soy sauce....and Chinese food only looks good, it never actually tastes good, it's never truly satisfying. I gave the delivery guy $2.20 in tips.
