** pls see my previous post in this thread. i have no strong opinion on the pageant, i haven't seen one. the girls strut in their bikins and like to show off their looks, what's the big deal?MaxEntropy_Man wrote:so your objection to beauty pageants (i seem to remember you saying something about them in the past, maybe i am mistaken) is not that they objectify women, that men drool over the pageants, but that they objectify the wrong kind of women? is that it? i thought your dislike of them was based on something bigger than petty jealousy.pravalika nanda wrote:oh come on, max, how can I not be excited when a telugu girl from new york wins? and she's so earthy and indian-looking. she's not arab-looking like hema malini or iranian-looking like kareena or mixed-race like parvathi melton. she's a real typical dusky telugu girl and by thinking outside the box and going for this competition she's achieved something special.MaxEntropy_Man wrote:i thought you're the kind of person that is put off by pageants.pravalika nanda wrote:oh yeah, she is very cute. nice, regular, hard-working girl, no political or caste connections.Kris wrote:>>>Just saw her on youtube. that she won in atlantic city, in America when even in India she would not have won because Indians are far more racist, bigoted, and just downright nasty, trashy, casteist attests to the simple fact that america is the place where one can find fairness, equality and justice. it just makes me so proud of American people. just like you know, when Obama won, it made me respect Americans.
you know what i'd like to see, i think after this they have the miss universe pageant. i'd like to see nina davuluri win the miss universe pageant beating whatever junky fair or arab-indian kaboothar trash the Indians will drool over and serve up for the competition.
as an indian woman i'm happy that people with dark skin are appreciated for their beauty, it makes it easier for me to accept my looks and not be made to feel deficient.

i hate it when most people assume that bollywood(and other assorted woods) is the only representation of indian culture. i used to clarify, educate and talk about other aspects of indian culture when i was young and energetic about all that. now, i just nod my head and say, yeah, we are like that only.

but bn/kuchipudi are not synonymous with india like indian cinema dance numbers are and hence they do not deserve to be presented on the international stage. for eg, bn is a dance that a tiny portion of the south indian elite appreciates and for a long time monopolized (after they stole it from the devadasi types). further, bn has remained the same since its inception, with no real growth, depth, breadth, fusion, inclusion, experimentation or appeal. bn is so unpopular unless you're the nouveau riche or culturally unmoored and trying to find a place in a particular niche of society. basically the culturally elite like it and they should continue to enjoy it, no need to subject the rest of us to the dance of anaerobic glycolysis. Bollywood dances are fun, inclusive, have exciting choreography and are just enjoyable. and just look at how people from every nook and cranny of the world dance to Bollywood numbers, it's utterly ridiculous to bring up bn into this discussion, when in fact you should be recognizing bolly's contribution to making all things indian popular and likeable. what did bn do for us? please tell me.indophile wrote:It appears it surely was. yeah, bn is just about the make up and costumes and jewelry, and the woman gets on the stage and has very little to do. thankfully, one can always hope to listen to excellent nattuvangam and great music at these "dance" recitals.indophile wrote:It appears it surely was. My reply is to indo. No, these days, a lot of artists including myself don't dress up the traditional way for all BN recitals. depending on the occasion and the audience and of course the length of the show, costumes and make up have become considerably simple and most of the time, i do my own make up myself. nattuvanagam? you are kidding yourself. Other than arengetrams, even prominent artists use recorded music.Kris wrote:>>>good point!indophile wrote:It appears it surely was. Re: Desi in Miss America Paegent
there are a few good bn pieces and dancers. however bn does not deserve the high place that the such crowd insists upon. bolly has made a bigger, positive impact across the world and it's a shame that southern indinas refuse to acknowledge that.garam_kuta wrote:
i went to a sangeet recently and people of every age, even a woman in chronic heart failure and an old woman with a cane prepared and staged bolly dances for the occasion. an equal number of men also partook in it. the music was great, everyone had very nice, clean decent fun. can you say that about the bn, where upper middle class women lounge around talking about gurus and pedigrees and at the end of it subject us to mostly boring moves? bolly is not perfect of course, but it is in several ways superior to bn. cuz no matter how many years of bn or kuchipudi a girl takes she knows that the winning song is always going to be from bollywood.
also if a girl has a choice between k and bn, I suggest she go for kuchipudi, because it is a dance-drama there are more themes to explore there. I have actually seen a kuchipudi dance drama on spousal abuse and alcoholism in an indian village. kuchipudi has kept up with the times and is also accessible to the common, even uneducated man. Maybe that automatically demotes kuchipudi for several people here. Also, when a dancer is balancing a pot on her head with her feet in a brass plate, the audience is not only awake, it's exciting for them and they empathize with the dancer. Kuchipudi also is set to excellent music and singing.

If not bn, if not kuchipudi (dunno what it is), if not katthak (Which I like the most I guess), if not Bollywood, if not Bhangra, if not garba or dandiya, then what is the dance of India? Isn't Bollywood dance a simplified and comprehensive version of all of the above, including western dances as well.

Re: Desi in Miss America Paegent
When i was growing up, 1 or 2 days before the wedding, specially while the women folks were getting mehendi done, all the women from the family and neighborhood would get together. Someone would have a dholak and/or harmonium on, and they would sing usual wedding songs, usually their own folk songs in their own dialect - I have seen UP and marwari. Some of the songs would be geared towards teasing the bride or the MIL to be. Every once in a while, some women or girls would get up and dance. There would be simple songs formulated to talk about this aunt or that aunt of the bride of the groom and they would get up and dance. There would always be some show-stealers, who would dance amazingly, or singers who sang amazingly. But it was always about getting in the mood of the wedding and setting the right stage. If there was a dholki called, there would be money collected and given to him. Sometimes this gana-bajana would go through the night. Sometimes men folk would also participate. Was nothing like stage fashion parege and musicians and bollywood and 2-week rehearsals and event organizers of today. But it's also good to see a well orchestrated show, they also try to bring the old flavor back by bringing in all the important family members and making them participate. In XH's family, the trend is to book a discotheque and/or get over a DJ and they go crazy dancing all night before the wedding, sometimes after it too. That's the modern marathi for you. Dunno what they did in earlier times.MaxEntropy_Man wrote:wait. so sangeet is the name for a ceremony like rishi said? i have always thought that sangeet means music.Vidya Bagchi wrote:The Sangeet of today is a much larger and god knows what version of sangeet that we saw growing up.Rishi wrote:Is it not some kind of a pre-wedding ceremony for NI folks?MaxEntropy_Man wrote:sangeet means music. so what does going to a sangeet mean?
Would be something like these below although the pareeneeta version is too bollywoody, but ya, there would be stories in the songs, all meant to tease the bride or the groom or their parents. Can't find the real video of banno rani from The Earth. From what I remember, that would be pretty close too to what I have seen. Movies also pick from from old folk songs and simplify them to be viewed by the whole country.

There are few of the songs i remember, but will quote this one coz my sis and I had LOLed when we first heard it. This one was when the bride came to sit down in the center of the group
meri poori naram mera halwa garam
tujhe ajmer ke ladke pe itna ghamand
kahi dilli ka hota to karti julam
then the song would go making it bombay or london or paris or new york, and then it would build up based on its on whoever wanted to join singing and add other rhymes or words or cities to it, until someone came up with a new song, and so on.

aiyyo ji! just as you throw out hyderabadi/nizami cuisine when you throw out AP cuisine, you throw out mughlai and awadhi cuisine with UP cuisine. i am not much of a fan of chicken pulusu (or any chicken curry for that matter -- with the exception of butter chicken) or gongura pachadi but give me hyderabadi biryani any day!Propagandhi711 wrote:

whats good about it? my experience came from eating home cooked food a few times and eating in agra and allahabad. I could go for another lifetime without eating it again. same goes for gujju food...I detest it more than UP food infactVidya Bagchi wrote:What's so bad about UP food?Propagandhi711 wrote:Here are a few things I'd rather undergo than watch a bn program, live or recorded:

i love maharashtrian food. uncomplicated, nutritious, not oily and fattening, and flavorful.Huzefa Kapasi wrote:be bold and say you detest north indian cuisine. which north indian state's cuisine you like? rajasthan? bihar? punjab? kashmir? bengal? jharkhand?Propagandhi711 wrote:whats good about it? my experience came from eating home cooked food a few times and eating in agra and allahabad. Re: Desi in Miss America Paegent
I had a few rajastani dishes and they were good: mainly banjara dal (sickly dal), some okra based dish & stuffed bitter gourd dish and the usual kadi dishes of the marwadis. punjab is ok, so is bengali. does bihar have a cuisine of it's own? kashmir food is too rich for my taste and too mildHuzefa Kapasi wrote:be bold and say you detest north indian cuisine. which north indian state's cuisine you like? rajasthan? bihar? punjab? kashmir? bengal? jharkhand?Propagandhi711 wrote:whats good about it? my experience came from eating home cooked food a few times and eating in agra and allahabad. no bihar does not have a cuisine of it's own for north indian cuisine is a continuum (perhaps kashmir can be excluded here). but there are a few signature bihari dishes -- litti chokha, sattu and hotel mamta's tandoori chicken in bhaktiarpur.Propagandhi711 wrote:

Also there is no one Bengali cuisine. For example, Sylhet cuisine is very different in that there's very little fish in their specialties; it's all meat, meat, and more meat. Also, there is lot of difference in the cooking styles of West Bengal and East Bengal.Huzefa Kapasi wrote:no bihar does not have a cuisine of it's own for north indian cuisine is a continuum (perhaps kashmir can be excluded here). but there are a few signature bihari dishes -- litti chokha, sattu and hotel mamta's tandoori chicken in bhaktiarpur.
