Medical residents do 24 hours non-stop (officially) the first year. It used to be 36 non-stop hours but the rules were changed about 15 years ago.

And there are people who work 12 to 16 hour days..... Hv seen scores of low-skilled people in construction, hospitality (hotel/motel), etc...work from 7 AM to 10 PM.

The way they get around is they pay min wage for 8 hours and "encourage" them to work for another 3 to 5 hours at a marginally higher rate....

(Of course, when one is illegal or a foreigner - all bets are off. As I see such people all the time on a daily basis, I am least bit sympathetic to Sangeeta. As I read in a comment - at $3.31/hr with room and food in a Luxury apt in Manhattan with access to all electronics, gadgets, picnics, parties and trips - ANY foreigner or an american making min wage in NYC would love Sangeeta's job.)
