Ha,

My two cents. 
Charity and NGOs are generally positive contributors in areas of democratic government legitimate areas of influence such as education, hospitals, fundamental research etc.  
where business and consumer products are concerned, charity should be able to compete with market forces to survive and thrive. Pity will only help you for limited time.
Example of non profits surviving in commercial world are National Public Radio (NPR),
and US Olympic Association etc.
