Speaking only for myself..feel conflicted when my identities clash. I am also against inviting
Mr. Rajapaksha..who is responsible for war crimes- genocide and slaughter of Srilankan Tamils..the misery, the displacement of thousands. Mr. Prabhakaran is long gone..but, the suffering of Tamils continues..

*I do fully understand the reason for the invite- India has to look after its "self-interests"..when it comes to a neighbor..and make nice.

This is why people like me (I say this knowing, I am perhaps the only Tamilian, except for Kayal.. most Tamilians in this forum- still readily point to Prabhakaran and turn blind to the suffering of living Tamilians) ..are very skeptical and feel a disconnect with any party in power in the Central Govt..be it Congress or BJP, when they honor a man/his govt- who has systematically denied the rights of people, killed and displaced thousands of people I care about (*even the UN, including the US have come a long way in admitting the war atrocities.)

Do feel an ache, when I sympathize with fellow tamilians, now have hardly any hope when it comes any changes, which will help them.

Hope I am proven wrong, in this matter.

If SAARC leaders are all invited, how can the govt. ignore one country? Even PakiSatan is invited - I am sure there are those who object to this. This is just an invitation to a social gathering (and possibly for improving ties). India can still hold on to her position on Sri Lanka's treatment of Tamils.

Moreover, Vaiko doesn't really have any political clout - he has no MPs in parliament. So, he can protest outside parliament and see how far he can succeed.

It would be interesting to see how Jaya (and K'nidhi) will react.

Modi will look at the country as a whole, see which position is best for the country and act decisively. He is known for that and has the necessary seats in parliament to back him.

I wanted to express my personal displeasure and opposition, and did so. I fully understand the "realities" of politics and self-interests of everyone! With 3000 special guests..am sure it will be a spectacular ceremony-event.

I think Vaiko is among the most boring and unimpressive politicians in TN, that's a different matter:)

A little Geo political history lesson for SuCHers:

Modi made a great move by inviting ALL SAARC heads:

This makes him cme across as an open-minded friendly guy with whom issues can be discussed and resolved. Sends a positive message to the world who will think twice about blaming India for (false) agression.

Avoids the tricky questin of should he or Shariff visit first. This gives an opening/test for Sharif to visit without feeling bad and prevents Modi from having to make his own decision. Now it is Sharif's litmust test.

Beggardeshi hasina is India's best bet. After vitriolic campaign it is a good way to assuage Hasina and protect her from her own enemies.

Srilanka - great opportunity for Rajapaksa to meet him and Modi to do some plain talk asking him to put a stop to hurting the hindus. Hindus and BJP consider Budhists as a branch of Hnduism (that is why Rajapakse can enter Tirupati temple/Gurvayoor while Maria cannot - technically). But, if it comes down to Hindus and Budhists, BJP will lean towards Hindus. Rajapakse will understand.

Assam Bodos dont want Modi to invite Hasina, Pakistanis dont want Modi to invite Karzai.

But, by calling all these people for his inauguration, he is sending a message that he is the undisputed king in the region - what with his superlative parliament strength and his tough image. It will be MODI who will be talking the talk with these guys. some will be assured, some will be reassured, some will be cautioned and some will be told to behave.

This is how coronation of Emperors are held in old days. All the small kings in the region will attend, give gifts, and pay obeisance.

This is not the time to pick and chose and selectively invite leaders and/or express policy matters. There is plenty of time to do that.

P.S. In the mean time, the SL is hitting at the Muslims very very hard: ban on Jijab, mosques destroyed, scores of riots and killings (Budhists never interfered with hindu/christian practices of tamils. it was out and out a political war - brought upon and made worse by Butcher Pirabhakaran.

Apparently, we have very different views on the Srilankan Tamils issue and Civil war..and that's that on that. We are not going to change our minds.

Hmm..an Emperor's Coronation!
Let this new Emperor of India have his grand ceremonial day as he wishes, with anyone he wants to invite as his guest..but, whether it is an ordinary citizen..or it is a Raja/Rani of a small kingdom, who is "expected" to come running with gifts and worship the Emperor, showing displeasure with courage, when it comes to the "small kingdom of Tamil Nadu" our interests and rights, that is important too.

It is important for Maharani Jayalalitha, to show her "symbolic" displeasure, and in this matter, all the regional parties in TN, will join together and support her.

*However, the smart and shrewd politician that she is..she is no fool..in the end, she will attend the Emperor's coronation, and not miss it! I will be quite surprised if she does not. Knowing her ways, she has to be the "first" in everything ..cannot function in a secondary role (deputy, asst) to anyone, does not trust anyone..will distance herself even from her own advisers..do exactly what she wants!
Will be interesting to see how "the lady" deals with the Emperor Modi!

It is unfortunate that when even a janitor needs to satisfy certain basic qualifications, politicians dont have any minimum requirements.
