Almost half of all couples in South India aged between 31-40 are INFERTILE
Your overly-nosey athai’s (aunt’s) worst nightmare may have just come true. Almost half the couples in South India (49 per cent) aged between 31-40 have been found to be infertile, says a survey called Helping Families. But, blind faith appears to be the only thing that can beat this shocking revelation.
For, in this day and age, a whopping 64 per cent of the infertile couples believe that religious rituals and God would bless them with a child, thus delaying infertility treatment till their mid-30s. The survey, endorsed by the Indian Society for Assisted Reproduction (ISAR) and the Asia Pacific Initiative on Reproduction (ASPIRE), is significant because no one has been able to put a number to quantify the prevalence of infertility in the country, till date.
This goes to show that the growth in fertility treatment centres over the past 15 years has been proportional to the decline in ‘normal’ fertile couples. Incidentally, there are at least 107 fertility centres in Chennai, and double the number across the State. The survey was done amongst 2,562 participants and 100 specialists in nine cities, including Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad.
The dip in sexual health and fertility have been chalked up to stress, lifestyle changes and changing environment.
“The good news is that 35 per cent of these couples in south India have at least undergone In Vitro Fertilization and about 80 per cent had come to realise that fertility treatment was a good option,” said Dr Jeyarani Kamaraj, fertility expert and director of Aakash Fertility Centre.
But with inflated prices (average cost for an IVF cycle is anywhere between Rs 1-5 lakh), long winding medical procedures and a less than 30 per cent chance of success, couples have been found to be disgruntled.

So, are they suggesting that becoming BIMARU is better than being progressive?

Koff..koff..the survey was carried out by ASPIRE - a regional association of those in the assisted fertility business and its desi counterpart - the Indian Society for Assisted Reproduction, duly supported by Merck.
Shame on our brainless media for giving credence to this pap (smear).

the survey was not "carried out" by ASPIRE; it was endorsed by them as per the news report. Of course, there is a conflict of interest if they funded the survey but the news report does not say that this was the case. Furthermore, the survey was done all across India. Why should it pinpoint South Indian couples to have significantly less fertility if it was indeed a cooked up survey as you seem to suggest.

Wait. Was this a vast North Indian conspiracy to demoralize South Indians?

I'm not sure why you're so excited about South India registering 49% infertility versus 46% national average. To my mind, both numbers are equally non-credible given who conducted and sponsored the survey.
PS: It is more than a little disturbing how easily you could believe that in a country of 1.2 billion people (and growing), 46% of couples could be infertile!!

in a country where there are plenty of kids on the streets and in need of help, why isn't adoption the preferred solution to infertility over expensive fertility treatments?

these were the cities from which samples were taken: Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Agra and Kochi. of these nine cities, four are in south india (bangalore, hyderabad, Kochi, and Chennai). if we assume that equal number of samples were taken from the nine cities then almost 50% of the samples were from south india. this skew in the number of samples taken from south india would also result in a skew in the national average for infertility. notice also the headline in The Hindu newspaper whose link you give:

I'm not talking about the 49% vs 46%. Even if there were no skew, it is strange someone would believe that patently absurd headline.

This is probably the only place where BiMaRU states can claim top honors. Unless, perhaps we look at infant mortality or such other figures.

Something else for your consideration:
MUMBAI: Southern India -- especially, Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu -- is greying much faster than the rest of the country. Uttar Pradesh, on the other hand, is projected to remain the youngest state for three decades, starting from 2011, and will be followed by Maharashtra, Bihar and West Bengal, says a study by the International Institute of Population Sciences.
UP, much to the chagrin of certain parties in Maharashtra, is expected to throw up an army of workers twice the size of Maharashtra's or thrice that of Gujarat's. Many Indian states, including Maharashtra, can therefore expect job-seekers from UP to swamp them if the state does not see a remarkable turnaround in generation of new jobs and economic opportunities.
If the high fertility rate of UP will probably add to the young population, there are certain corners that are not expected to contribute much to what is popularly called the "demographic dividend". Better educated states like Tamil Nadu are expected to see the least population growth till 2026, while the most literate state in the country, Kerala, will largely see an ageing population. IIPS professor P Arokiaswamy points out that the southern states were "decades ahead of several northern states in demographic transition". Their total fertility rate was a high four (at which UP currently is) way back in the 1960s, and they have much lower rates now. Incidentally, apart from Karnataka, another southern state, there are two North Indian states, in the "greying segment" -- Himachal Pradesh and Punjab.
...Data from the ministry of labour and employment shows that the median age in India in 2000 was 24, compared to 30 in China, 38 in Europe and 41 in creaky old Japan. A more recent analysis of population projections put out by the National Commission on Population says: "Kerala, where lower fertility and mortality rates have been achieved earlier than other states, the proportion of older persons aged 60 years and above is expected to increase from 11% in 2001 to 18% in 2026." Every sixth individual in Kerala is, therefore, expected to be a senior citizen by 2026. And, if the median age of population in Kerala is expected to go up from 28 in 2001 to 38 in 2026, the same in Uttar Pradesh is expected to rise from 19 to 27.

the fact that the south indian population is aging rapidly while a state like UP continues to remain youthful (in terms of median age) bears consideration and reflection.

This too is an outcome of the differential fertility rates. Obviously if BiMaRU citizens keep breeding like rabbits, the demographic pyramid there will be more pyramid-like compared to the narrowing base in states with lower fertility.
There's nothing to consider or reflect there. Given the low literacy levels, poor education levels and lack of any higher value skills, these youthful men and women will be tomorrow's drivers and maid servants for the rest of India.

Shweta Narayan, an environmental activist, from Bihar, living in Chennai, said something that shows how Chennai has changed in recent years, both in character and composition. "When I first came here in 2003, I didn't know Tamil and that was a big problem, since people would basically not speak anything else. Even when I went to the beach in the evenings I would hear Tamil all around me, and the older people I met used to discuss news in the US, since their children had gone to study there."
A few years later, she got the shock of her life one day when travelling in an auto-rickshaw. "I was trying to speak to the driver in Tamil (she'd learnt since then), and he kept replying in Hindi." And to complete the picture, she says that when she goes to the beach now, she can hear more people speaking in Hindi than in Tamil.
As stories go, this is a random observation. But in another sense, it is deeply illustrative. Put simply, there are two trends at play here, and they could come to define Tamil Nadu for many years to come — Tamils going out and seeking better jobs for themselves and the flow of labour coming in from other states.

the population of Uttar Pradesh itself as of now is over 200 million. If UP was a country on its own it would be the sixth or seventh largest country in the world in terms of population. Kerala is puny in comparison.

in terms of population density (number of people per square mile or square km) UP is behind countries like belgium or holland. i submit that it is not population but population density that should determine conclusions and inferences about overpopulation. so no need to get worried or excited.

on the contrary, UP's contribution to Indian culture has been immense. the reason for UP's economic decline in comparison to Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu is as follows:
the kings and nawabs of UP rebelled against the British and joined the freedom fighters in the struggle for independence. In contrast, the kings and nawabs (including the Nizam) of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu decided to side with the British. The British naturally rewarded the states ruled by the traitors by giving various economic concessions. In contrast, they went about raping states like UP (economically). Genuine patriots of tamil nadu and andhra pradesh recognize the sacrifices made by the people of UP during the indian struggle for independence (1857-1859). they hang their heads in shame about the fact that their leaders became traitors during this period.

Here: http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/tamil-nadu/fertility-has-taken-a-dip-in-south-india-survey/article5151054.ece
I'm not sure why you're so excited about South India registering 49% infertility versus 46% national average. To my mind, both numbers are equally non-credible given who conducted and sponsored the survey.
PS: It is more than a little disturbing how easily you could believe that in a country of 1.2 billion people (and growing), 46% of couples could be infertile!!
i will point out that the survey was not a pan indian survey in the sense that it did not incorporate data from rural India. it was done in nine cities in India including bangalore, chennai, thiruvanthapuram, hyderabad, mumbai, delhi, and kolkata. in the big cities infertility is more liable to be a problem because people have started marrying late and having children at a later age. in rural india especially people marry early and are hence more fertile. since UP is not as industrialized as south india or maharashtra the people continue to marry early. on average of course. when UP becomes more industrialised i would expect people to experience the same problem with respect to infertility that south indians are experiencing now.

Fertility stats for Indian states. UP and Bihar are the highest. Some of it could be the "baalika-vadhu" effect.

Re: Almost half of all couples in South India aged between 31-40 are INFERTILE
Yesterday my Hyderabadi friend was telling me about his 12 year old nephew who starts his day at 3 am, goes to tuition from 4-7 am, attends school, then goes back to tuition for a recap of the morning, then does his home work, etc and finally goes to sleep around 10. So he gets by with about 5 hours of sleep.
Do kids in other cities in India also go through the same disturbing routine?
The stress levels seem to be high right from childhood. I hope not. Will India turn into a nation of zombies, programmed and ruthlessly trained to crack the IIT code from infancy, incapable of even eating their own food by hand(yes, a true story. A 13 year old kid couldn't mix rice and curry together with his hand because all he does is study and his mom feeds him).

Urban Indian kids are also very obese now from bad eating habits, little physical activity and lack of proper sleep.

yeah grow more rapist-murderers at an even rapid clip in that shithole state until rest of the country decides to build a fence around it
in terms of population density (number of people per square mile or square km) UP is behind countries like belgium or holland. i submit that it is not population but population density that should determine conclusions and inferences about overpopulation. so no need to get worried or excited.
population density indeed is not a problem below some critical threshold if people are highly skilled, educated, and productive. the comparison with belgium and holland is ludicrous because the population of UP is in the stone ages compared to belgium and holland. they have no marketable skills useful in a global economy, and worse they are young, testosterone filled, and because of their own cultural proclivities are eliminating girls at an alarming rate. not a good combination.

the following article cogently and convincingly explains why a larger population is better for various reasons than a low population:
http://primacyofreason.blogspot.com/2012/01/economic-benefits-of-large-growing.html
UP has the raw material. if most people of UP do not have marketable skills then they need to be given marketable skills. once that happens UP will start outshining the so called developed states like Tamil Nadu because of its significantly larger population as compared to the other Indian states.
i will point out though that farmers of UP are doing yeoman's service as far as the agricultural output is concerned. For instance, UP is the second largest producer of sugarcane in India (after Maharashtra), the largest producer of mangoes, and so on. The soil of UP (with the exception of Bundelkhand) is generally more fertile as compared to the soil of places like Tamil Nadu and is hence suitable for agriculture.
furthermore, it is Uttar Pradesh which sends the largest number of workers abroad:
http://qz.com/225236/uttar-pradesh-sends-the-largest-number-of-indian-workers-abroad-not-kerala-or-punjab/
so your claim that UPwalahs have no marketable skills in a global economy falls flat on its face.

Only five states, including Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh, have registered growth rates higher than their respective targets set for the 11th Plan period (2007-12) so far, Parliament was informed today.
"The states of Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh have realised growth rate higher than the target. Other states have experienced lower growth vis-a-vis the target...," Minister of State for Planning Ashwani Kumar said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha. He was replying to a query on whether growth during the first four years of the 11th Five Year Plan (2007-12) in most of the 17 non-special category states have remained below the target set for the Plan period.
Bihar recorded a growth rate of 11.44% in Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) during 2007-08 to 2010-11, against the 11th Plan target of 7.60%. Chhattisgarh achieved an average growth of 9.71% during the four-year period, against a target of 8.60%.
In case of Uttar Pradesh, the GSDP grew by 7.28% during 2007-08 to 2010-11. The 11th Plan growth target for the state is 6.10%. "The hitherto low performing states such as Bihar, Orissa and Chhattisgarh have started growing faster than the national average and the state of Uttar Pradesh has achieved much higher than the target growth rate," the minister said. He added, "This trend reflects gradual movement towards convergence in economic attainment across states and reduction in economic disparities." Maharashtra's economy expanded by 9.42%, compared to the target of 9.10% for the period, while Punjab registered a growth 7.50% during the first four years of the Plan, against the set target of 5.90%.
All other states have lagged behind their respective targets during the first four years of the 11th Five Year Plan.

Despite an abundance of fertile land ( no credit to them , it is the largesse of the river ganges) , a huge population that can be compared only to roaches, the UP farmers still come in second place ? Shame on them. Their agricultural skills must also belong to the medieval age.

I asked my friend the same question. He said we might be witnessing a mutation right in front of our eyes as these kids adjust to the "new normal" getting by with 5 hours of sleep and a donkey's load of learning.
