Re: india - england summer 2014 test series
i'd like pankaj singh given another go given that ishant is not match fit and won't be for the manchester test. also dump nohit for ashwin. ashwin can contribute as much as nohit can and we need a specialist spinner. critical question -- time to dump dhawan for gambhir? he seemed to be in good nick. just getting out to poor shot selection. maybe he should be persisted with in manchester. that's the way i am leaning now.
it's embarrassing that they had the better spinner on a spinning wkt and our batsmen who are needlessly glorified for being able to play spin so well every time any english or aussie commentator opens his mouth, were pathetic against moeen ali. what have we come to?

Re: india - england summer 2014 test series
"And so the moment was lost. In the instant when Ishant Sharma was ruled out in Southampton, Ravi Ashwin had to be reinstated. In what could haunt MS Dhoni for the rest of this series, he instead chose another rookie, Pankaj Singh. In that moment he totally went against the book.
Extraordinary really, especially when you consider the state of the pitch over the five days - dry underneath, perfect for spin later. Ashwin's experience needed to replace Ishant Sharma's, let alone his proven wicket-taking skill. I fell over when I heard a debutant was in, and a sarcastic tweet followed."
http://www.espncricinfo.com/magazine/content/story/766263.html
-> Pankaj Singh's inclusion was mind boggling.. Without Ishant, how many test matches our bowlers played, in total?

Dhoni should have learnt by now that extra batsman was a failed trick. If the top fails, the extra batsman failed too. With the present ineffective (not just inexperienced) bunch of bowlers, India needs five to just take the opponents punishment and get 10 wickets. Ashwin could have easily replaced a batsman in 3rd test (with the bat actually).

Replace Dhawan with Gambhir; Rohit with Ashwin, Move Rahane to #3 and move down Pujara to #5
Pace bowling - drop this Pankaj Singh dude.

Looks like india has regained its 2011 test form.
4 for 8.
30 is the new hundred.
accomplshed rehabilitation of cook and bell.
helped england regain some confidence.
could very well finish this test in 3 days. good for sightseeing.

At the end of first day, India is already staring at certain defeat. This team does not have the will to fight back. Kohli and pujara, who are expected to carry the load failed to show up.
Taking a look at the overall overseas performance in the last year, India will need many more years.

Looks like everyone in the Indian team got paid well.
These businessmen make money in all months during any year, whether those are IPL months or not.

My biggest disappointment so far is Pujara. He is supposed to be the next wall but his performance so far doesn't even compare to a couple of bricks.

i keep an eye on the tennis going-ons and try to watch the final stages of grand slams. that's about it as far as watching sports is concerned. cricket was/is a black hole in terms of time and add to that, the various arguments over it. greg chappell and sourav ganguly took an enormous chunk of my time! and as veeji says, they don't even know i exist!

Is this Varun Aaron a real deal, with his physique similar to Sreesanth and given his track record he probably will breakdown more of often than pushing the opponent batsmen on the back foot at the crease.

Re: india - england summer 2014 test series
is ali really sensational or are our batsmen making him look sensational? he is certainly bowling a good line, not afraid to pitch it outside off, flight and loop and all that. ashwin was just flat on middle and off.
tell you what, since i came back to watching cricket after being completely out of the loop in the 90s, i haven't seen an indian spinner bowl with guile like the oldies from the quartet. kumble was immensely successful, but he was a different kind of bowler. harbhajan briefly had it and then screwed up after becoming too dependent on the doosra. it seems to me the most conventional offspinner with all the standard bag of tricks come from england these days -- swann and now ali. what happened to us? we seem to be making guys bowl a flat trajectory, quickly fired in without much side spin over after over. i really think limited overs cricket has totally crapped out the one thing we used to do well in the bowling department -- spin.

Ali, with 19 wickets, is second leading in this series, only behind Anderson who got 21.MaxEntropy_Man wrote:is ali really sensational or are our batsmen making him look sensational? he is certainly bowling a good line, not afraid to pitch it outside off, flight and loop and all that. ashwin was just flat on middle and off.

The "test" specialists like Pujara, Gambhir, and Kohli are utter failures. These are guys who scored BIG runs overseas.
Bowling is D E A D. Out "imitation" fast bowlers can be easily sorted out and can never win a S E R I E S. Spinners are laughable. Jadeja is a "recognized" spinner only bcz there is no alternative. Ashwin is all gas overseas.
Forgive my cynicism. I can only identify ONE major reason for this fast and massive decline in Indian test cricket.

Bhuvaneswar Kumar scored more runs (238) than Pujara (207), Kohli (108), Dhawan (122) and Jadeja (177), and we thought bowling will be our Achilles heel

utter humiliation. Bowling is better than batting (at least they got all ten wickets).
6 ducks.
Two innings total is less than 313.
are there any new ways India can be humiliated?
They should cry uncle and go home without playing the final test.

Shockingly, the Indian batsmen have made a bowler out of a part-time spinner - Moeen Ali - who has no arm ball, no doosra, only an innocuous off-break.
Hey at least in one department, India is maintaining its tradition. India finds a couple of great batsmen, and one or two great bowlers - for the opponents.

India can still draw the series if they can get Pissant back and the batsmen finally put up a big score.

Agreed. India has made bowling heroes out of Salim Malik, Aamer Sohail, Carl Hooper etc in the past. And helping the opposition batsmen rediscover form was a given. How could they not extend the famous hospitality?Marathadi-Saamiyaar wrote:MaxEntropy_Man wrote:is ali really sensational or are our batsmen making him look sensational?

148 all out... I hope India also prepares bowling pitches. Let the batsman improve and score...not the way it is being done in IPL.
India has almost no match winning bowler....Expecting Ishant to be blow away b England this time around. He has already done his bit for the series.
Funny how Dhoni is the most consistent batsman in this series.

Our bowlers are flat and batsmen flat-footed.
India is a training team...they country by country and train their national team. You know how College basketball teams play 3 to 5 friendly matches before their regular season starts....that is how wonly.

India is revisiting the dark days of 2007 world cup. Lack of skill or will to fight.
Not many bowling units can fight back with 150 on board.
They should have walked away from 5 th test and do some deep thinking.

I was going to suggest that. I dont think India is going to come back in the second innigs of the very last test after getting buried in the previous 2 tests. Although Dhoni is batting well, the rest have failed. I feel a schism and a serious disconnect within in the team. They were at #5 in test ranking a few weeks back. I will not be surprised if fall behind Windies and just above beggardeshis by end of Nov.
India should concede the match at the end of today and the team should enjoy the days before flying back.
What a slap on the face for BCCI, Srini, and Indian cricket. The Whities are back on top - for the next 10 years.
