Ramanujan
apparently, this thamizh movie stars the grandson of Savithri and Gemini. the guy looks pretty stone faced! expressionless and awkward indeed.

Well Ramanujan - who lived only till 32 - perhaps had a boring life except for his Math life. Would not be surprised if it is a flop.
Rajni should have acted as Ramanujan with Shreya as his wife in madissar. Naturally, Ramanujan would have become even more popular in Japan and Germany, and even Naarth India and hindians might come to know of him.
Dev Patel and who is his kissing heroine?

Why do these filmy family guys have to be in front of the camera? If they are really passionate about movies why can't they do direction, story writing, dialogue writing, etc?

Wasn't ramanujan like that in real life ? The guy was just trying to do a realist portrayal.

Re: Ramanujan
Why shouldn't Dev Patel be cast as Ramanujan? A producer who had the foresight and good taste to acquire the rights to Robert Kanigel's splendid biography of Ramanujan years ago can also be expected to cast suitable actors in the principal roles..Impedimenta wrote:apparently, this thamizh movie stars the grandson of Savithri and Gemini. the guy looks pretty stone faced! expressionless and awkward indeed.

Author Kanigel, I think, spent considerable time in Kumbakonam, where R attended school, researching his early life, and absorbing that town's milieu.
Anyone who is interested in R's life should read Kanigel's biography of R.
If you want to watch a thrilling movie of an eminent, but fictional, western mathematician, don't miss "proof"; it has Gwyneth Paltrow, the british actor who played the lead in "silence of the lambs" - i've forgotten his name - and matthew mcconaboogaloo in it; it may even have had naseeruddin shah in smallish role.
Yes, events in mathematicians' lives can be thrilling. Someone ought to make a movie about the life of the contemporary Russian mathematician, Perelman, who declined the Fields Medal on principle.
If the british movie on Ramanujan is faithful to Kanigel's book, I expect it to be much better than the tamil production.

>>> That should be interesting, considering especially that some eminent mathematicians still seem not fully convinced with Perelman's proof for Poincare' conjecture.

A few mathematicians have had more than exciting lives. Galois for example. Paul Erdos is pretty exciting too.swapna wrote:Why shouldn't Dev Patel be cast as Ramanujan? oh IMO, he is a terrible actor. case in point : Avatar, the last airbender. he ruined the story for me. Anyway, thanks for the reco on proof. I just GOOGLED it and plot sounds intriguing. Will see if Netflix streams it.
and, no doubt, even with the bad casting, the British version will be better than the thamizh version.
