Sipping a margarita of my own making. I call it Merlot's Margarita(C): One measure tequila, one measure cointreau, lemon-ginger syrup, topped with iced water.

Tomorrow, I plan on using crushed ice with the same recipe for a frozen margarita.

Went to meet an ex at News Cafe, a restaurant in DLF Promenade, a mall in Vasant Kunj, Delhi. Looked at the drinks menu. 30ml of single malts started at 900. Asked for Old Monk rum, they didn't have any. Ex ordered a gin (bombay sapphire) and tonic. I ordered the same. Her husband would pop in from time to time and he drank maybe 3-4 leffe beers. During the evening we ordered two food platters - finger food. At the end of the evening, the bill came to Rs. 17,600. I was a bit pissed. Didn't expect desi booze and two food platters to cost this much. A bit later, I was making phone calls to friends. Went into another restaurant and asked for 60ml of Old Monk rum. That was Rs. 650. Next day I was talking to my dad about this and he said a whole bottle of old monk rum can be had from the army canteen for Rs 70.

I also went into a liquor shop in the same mall. A 750 ml bottle of Glenlivet 12 was $75. A 1 liter bottle of the same stuff in US retail stores can be had for $35-45.

Booze is expensive in India.

There's 200% import duty and then local governments demand hefty excise / permit fees. On top of all that restaurants view booze as a lucrative cash-cow and slap on obscene margins. If I'm paying, I stick to Kingfisher beer when I eat out. All my fancy drinking is either at home or at corporate-funded bashes.

Some of these hip watering holes and lounges etc just rob you clean. I avoid them like the plague.

To make up for many days of abstinence, I imbibed the following:

Tuesday: 2 Singapore slings and a tiger beer

Wednesday: 2 glasses of merlot followed by 4 shots of whisky (from four different countries)

Thursday: 2 glasses of cabernet pre-dinner; innumerable flutes of champage (in all, 6 of us finished off nearly 3 bottles of moet & chandon imperial) over dinner
