a recommendation -- jack's abbey, 'excess' IPL. i was skeptical of IPLs for a long time because i had wrongly concluded that they were some kind of gimmickry from american brewers. i was wrong. removing the yeastiness of standard IPAs allows the hop fragrances and bitterness to shine through beautifully. and the 'excess' IPL from my local brewery (jack's abbey) is a fantastic example of this class of beers. try it if your distributor carries it or have them order it for you. the IPL is indeed a valid american brewing innovation.
an article about IPLs: https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/food/india-pale-lagers-craft-beers-category-stragglers/2013/09/09/183a732a-14df-11e3-a100-66fa8fd9a50c_story.html
they don't mention jack's abbey's IPLs, but i recommend them highly. oh and if you are ever in the framingham, ma area, i highly recommend their restaurant at the brewery too. german style biergarten seating -- grab a seat, have a beer, make a friend type deal. excellent food for vegetarians, occasional bratwurst eaters, and full on carnivores.

Yesterday with a cousin I hadn't met in a long time. Beautifully balanced IPA. Hoppy and malty. Not the usual hyper bitter American IPA.

The poor man's pinot noir. Made with gamay grape, a close cousin of the pinot noir variety. I like it for the smoothness.
