look at South Korea's medal haul since 1980s and check the economic graphic from above links.
South Korea's economic progress is followed by 'sporting culture' rise as in increase of medals.
Whether it is patents or Olympic medals, always remember it is the Economy , Stupid.

Re: South korea - Sports culture or economic growth
South Korea is one case, and doesn't tell the full story of Olympic achievement. Perhaps economic development leads to strong performance at the Olympics when there are other enabling factors at play in a society. I don't know. The fact that Ethiopia does a lot better than India should give us pause to attribute it all to the economy.

Host nation
Idefix,
Does this table from 2003 afro Asian games medal tally tells you that Ethiopia has better sporting culture than India? I am not saying India has some extreme sporting culture. If economics are better, countries to do better in sports and other measures.
Kenya, Jamaica, and Iran get more medals because each of them are better than any other country in a narrow band of sports. (India also won hockey gold for decades.) That does not prove they have an overall better sporting culture. Unless one argues that Olympic medals is the only goal for humanity and it elevates a nation to a sporting nation.
Once again, It is the economy.
