in bangalore, i once met an ethnic tamil girl who was born and brought up in karnataka. she knew both tamil and kannada. i asked her which of the two languages she considered to be her mother tongue and she said "both". I asked her to explain. And she said "Tamil is like my mother, and Kannada is like my father."*

*This is what i recall, but she may have said "Kannada is like my mother, and Tamil is like my father."
