The day after Dussera was celebrated with the burning of effigies of King Raavan in many parts of the country, depictions King Ram, his wife Sita and his brother Lakshman were set ablaze in the Mylapore area of Chennai.

On Wednesday evening, members of a Dravidian Periyarist group in Tamil Nadu organised a “Raavana Leela” to demonstrate their opposition to the Ram Leela celebrations that depict the victory of King Ram over Raavan, who, according to Indian mythology, had kidnapped Ram’s wife Sita.

“Every year, in North India, Ram Leela is celebrated by burning effigies of Raavan,” said Tinker Kumaron, the Chennai district secretary of Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam. “This is being done to insult South Indians. We consider Raavan to be a Dravidian.”

In Ravan village of Vidisha district, devotees head to Ravana’s temple prior to every auspicious occasion or a festival. Before solemnising any marriage in the village, the first wedding card is sent to Ravana’s temple, one of the very few in India.
Even the children returning from school on their bicycles chant “Jai Lankesh…Jai Lankesh” while passing by the temple daily. Neither do the villagers burn Ravana’s effigy here, nor do they celebrate Dussehra.
The village is located in the Nateran tehsil of Vidisha district -- nearly 40 km from the district headquarters -- where Ravana has been worshipped for centuries by Kanyakubja Brahmins, a Brahmin sub-sect to which the demon king belonged.

The historical city of Agra may soon get a Ravana temple if a Brahmin community has its way.

On Dussehra, when people were gathering the Ramlile grounds to witness the burning of  Ravana's effigies, a group of Brahmins announced their plans to install a temple to worship  Ravana.
Not only this, they also plan to call for an immediate clamp down on the burning of Ravana effigies for Dusshera celebrations.

Belonging to the Saraswat sub-caste, these group of people on Dussehra were busy extolling the demon king's virtues and offered him prayers at the Vrihadeshwar Mahadev temple near the Yamuna river.

The convenor of this event Madan Mohan Sharma told India Today that Ravana was an outstanding politician and a highly learned Brahmin who was a worshipper of Lord Shiva.
He added that  Ravana was being punished every year for a mistake he committed centuries ago.
Madan Mohan said that the Ramayana written by Goswami Tulsidas is a half account while the other half of the story has been kept in dark. Ravana belonged to the Saraswat sub-caste of Brahmins and so those who belong to this caste have decided to build a  Ravana temple in Agra.
