Though started with good intentions, this has now become a monster. How the fuck can insurers jack up rates like this?

But when the 38-year-old Charlottesville husband and father of a 3- and a 1-year-old went to re-enroll this month, his only choice for coverage would cost him more than $3,000 a month for his family of four, which amounted to an increase of more than 300 percent over the $900 he paid the year before. And this is for the second-cheapest option, with a deductible of $9,200. “Helpless is definitely a good word for it,” Dixon said. “Rage is also a good word for it.”

Why is he complaining?

Millions of Americans are going to work everyday, doing everything to keep their jobs so that they can have health insurance for themselves and their families.

His employer subsidized the health coverage premium for him and his family.

He quit his job and took his chances to pursue his so called 'dream'.

Now he wants the American tax payers to subsidize his healthcare coverage.

He is a parasite.

If the current Republican Wealth Care bill passes the Senate, premiums for all people on the marketplaces will go up even more. That is in addition to the costs to you and me of 13 million more people being uninsured and showing up at emergency rooms.

If you believe insurers should not be allowed to raise rates as they wish, you are not taking a conservative position. Medicare-for-all would solve this problem, but the insurance and other medical lobbies have too many Democrats and all Republicans in their pockets to let that come to pass.

The article actually explains why the rates are going up. In addition to factors like small population size and the local hospital being expensive (both factors were present last year as well), there's this:

And finally, Virginia regulators told insurers to set their rates assuming that President Trump would eliminate cost-sharing reduction payments — which he did last month — that the government paid carriers to compensate the companies for discounts the law requires them to provide.

This action alone will cost Optima tens of millions of dollars, said Dudley.

“You take those two factors and then add the major uncertainty and instability out of Washington, D.C . . .it all combined in the perfect storm,” Dudley said. “It’s a tough message, and we anticipated it would be a tough message. We get it — this is frustrating.”

Why are premiums going up so dramatically? Because Trump and the Republicans in DC acted to make them go up.
