Cho Ramaswamy (writing in 1978): A Tamilian dilemma
Hindi films do a roaring business in Madras and some of the district headquarters in the state. Kishore Kumar is more popular among college students than any Tamil playback singer. How come? The Hindi pictures are promoted and sold. Nobody ever forces a Tamilian to see a Hindi film.
The propaganda made through the years by the DMK in Tamil Nadu has made Hindi the synonym of the North Indian capitalist. The illiterate among the Tamilians has been led to believe that Hindi is the language spoken only by Tatas, Birlas and affluent Marwari businessmen.
I wonder whether a Tamil villager could imagine the existence of poverty among the Hindi speaking people. Let the Central Government arrange free sight-seeing tours in the rural areas of the Hindi-belt, for the Tamil villagers.
It would be a real pleasure trip for the poor villagers for nothing consoles a human being like another man's misery. Brotherhood in poverty may be an eye-opener to the Tamilian. The sting would then automatically go out of the DMK and AIADMK's offensive against Hindi.
The Tamil youth today would be prepared to learn Hindi at least for the sake of enlarging his employment opportunities, provided of course he is not made to feel that he is studying a language under compulsion. Hindi would be learnt by the Tamilians at least by stages if the Janata men decide to give a holiday to their frequent exhibitions of Hindi fanaticism. If not, the Hindi-speaking people may be forced to learn something about the Tamilian's pride.
