Desist from reuse of cooking oil: Expert

A two-day national workshop on food adulteration concluded at Shri Guru Gobind Singh Jee Government College, Paonta Sahib, where chief guest Dr A Madhavan, Director, Centre for Quality Management and Food Safety, and vice president, Oil Technologists Association of India, elaborated on adulteration of argemon oil in mustard oil and harmful effects of growth hormone in vegetables, milk and chicken.
Dr Madhavan said one should desist from reuse of oil as it goes through many chemical reactions such as oxidation which was harmful to the health. He emphasized the significance of manufacturing and expiry date of oil and about its proper packing.
Dr Ashwani Rathore, vice-president, Reliance Retail Limited, Gurgaon, dwelt upon ‘Food Safety in Supply Chain of Dairy Industry’. He said it was alarming to note how antibiotics had become ineffective due to adulteration in milk.
The detrimental effects of milk adulteration were deliberated upon by Dr Atul Kaistha, Assistant Commissioner, Food Safety, Sirmaur, who also highlighted how adulterants like sugar, water, urea, pesticides, detergents, starch, melamine etc., were mixed with milk.
Chandan Pandey, HOD, Food and Drug Management, Mathura, dwelt upon “Detection of Food Adulteration as a New Hobby” through illustrations while Sanjay Agarwal, Director, Rich-Pro food, Paonta Sahib, presented his views on “Food Safety Management System”. TNS
