On Cholesterol and Diabetes
Last week, the FDA approved WARNING labels on Statin drugs - they may speed up prediabetics becoming full blown diabetics (DM 2). There have been studies leaking from Europe and elsewhere about the down side of Statins and cholesterol's relative nnocence in cardiovascular diseases (There was a thread 3, 4 months back on the Obsolete site by Sandilya).
In short, the statins reduce the cholesterol but also reduces the size of the particles, making it more dangerous to the arteries. Desis with high risk of cardiac diseases and recent Diabetes mania now are in for a bigger (conflicting) trouble.

Re: On Cholesterol and Diabetes
There is some miniscule risk from statins in pushing a pre-diabetic to become fully diabetic.
Do you know the odds of some one who is pre-diabetic that doesn't become fully diabetic? That is low too.
FDA warnings don't mean that all pre-diabetics will get diabetes. You are raising a hue and cry over something every drug goes through. Post approval testing of blockbuster drugs like statins, will show results that take a long-time to develop. This is one such result.
When Statins came into the market, everybody knew the risks of inhibiting cholesterol synthesis. There are so many cellular processes where cholesterol plays a vital role and scientists always wondered what will happen to those functions of cholesterol. But the benefits outweighed the risk factors. People continued taking those.
The role of cholesterol in heart disease is also being questioned after many years of research on that field. It doesn't mean high cholesterol diet and sedentary life style will not cause you heart problems. After years of research, the reverse is turning out to be non-beneficial.

Re: On Cholesterol and Diabetes
its a catch 22 situation
one dies from heart disease at a young age from high cholesterol without the use of statins
one takes the risk of getting diabetes from the statins but its a slow process
2nd option is better
