Andhra Pradesh: Claims and Counterclaims (chaos)
Hyderabad, Tue Jan 15 2013, 21:08 hrs
Andhra Pradesh Labour Minister Danam Nagender from Telangana claimed yesterday that there are "indications" from the Centre that Andhra Pradesh will be "bifurcated".
"We have indications from the Centre that AP is going to be bifurcated. Going by what the Centre is thinking, Hyderabad could be the common capital of the two new states for 10 years," he said.
AP Civil Supplies Minister D Sridhar Babu, also from Telangana, echoed Danam's claims, while Rajya Sabha member Palvai Govardhan Reddy joined the chorus.
Not to be outdone, AP Infrastructure and Investments Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao from Rayalaseema hit back saying, "We don't know what signals Danam has got, but we have received signals that the Centre is going to keep the state united".
Ganta went on to say that they would quit their posts if the Centre took a decision in favour of Telangana.
Today, AP Women Development and Child Welfare Minister Sunita Laxma Reddy too hinted that Telangana state would become a reality soon.
However, School Education Minister S Sailajanath made light of his Telangana colleagues' claims and maintained that they did not receive any signals on the state's bifurcation.
"All we know is that the Union Home Ministry is engaged in the exercise on the statehood issue and that it is looking into recommendations made by the Justice Srikrishna Committee," he said.
"We always stood for a unified state and we are meeting here on the January 17 to discuss the issue. In a democracy, everyone has a right to express his or her views," Sailajanath remarked, referring to the Telangana ministers' claims....
"If Telangana leaders have signals about bifurcation of the state, we too have signals that Andhra Pradesh will remain united," leaders from Rayalaseema said.
Such verbal volleys between ruling Congress leaders from Ralayaseema and Telangana have not gone down well with most senior Congress leaders who took exception to it.
"Such claims and counterclaims will only vitiate the peaceful atmosphere at a time when the Congress high command is seriously trying to resolve the statehood issue," All India Congress Committee (AICC) leader Ponguleti Sudhakar Reddy who hails from Telangana said.
He asked leaders from both sides to observe restraint and wait for the Centre's decision.

Re: Andhra Pradesh: Claims and Counterclaims (chaos)
NEW DELHI / HYDERABAD: The regional war of words began to get shriller 10 days ahead of the January 28 self-declared deadline by the UPA government on Telangana. Upping the decibel level, the Seemandhra delegation in New Delhi claimed that they would have no choice but to intensify the agitation against the division of the state as they aver that the UPA government is keen on granting Telangana. But back in Hyderabad, the Telangana leaders raged over the moves being made by the Congress leaders from the other two regions against the separate state becoming a reality and vowed to thwart the moves of the Seemandhra lobby.
"Though the party high command has not told us in so many words, my guess is that the UPA government is moving towards granting Telangana," minor irrigation minister T G Venkatesh, who is heading the Seemandhra delegation out to prevent the division of the state, told the media in New Delhi on Wednesday evening. The delegation, which included ministers Erasu Pratap Reddy, P Viswarup and Kasu Venkata Krishna Reddy besides several MLAs and MLCs, met AICC functionaries Ghulam Nabi Azad and Vayalar Ravi on Wednesday.
Stating that the Centre should think twice before taking any decision in favour of Telangana, the Seemandhra Congress leaders said they cautioned the Centre about a violent backlash like the one that erupted in the two regions in 2010 in case it decides to divide the state. Venkatesh said he also briefed the party leaders about the likely escalation of water wars among the three regions after T-formation. "We urged the Centre to give clarity to the people of Seemandhra to avoid any agitation" Venkatesh said. Law minister Pratap Reddy said they had raised the possible challenges the Rayalaseema region would face after the creation of Telangana. "The imminent threat of bifurcation is bound to foment political agitations in the Seemandhra region," he said.
The Telangana leaders too went on the offensive on Wednesday. T Congress MPs, who are also camping in Delhi, gave a call to the people to prevent the proposed meeting of the Seemandhra leaders that is scheduled to take place in the Club House in the secure environs of the Ministers' Quarters on Road No 12, Banjara Hills, at 11 am on Thursday. Terming the meeting as an attempt to scuttle the Telangana announcement by the Centre, MPs Madhu Yaskhi, S Rajaiah, Ponnam Prabhakar, Gutha Sukhender Reddy and G Vivenkananda declared that they would scuttle the meeting at any cost. Yaskhi went to the extent of charging that a handful of contractors and businessmen-politicians from the other two regions are behind the meeting. Telangana Jagruti president K Kavitha too reiterated on Wednesday that T activists would descend on the meeting venue on Thursday and prevent it from being held.
Despite the threats, the Seemandhra leaders appeared to be firm in holding the meeting. Finance minister Anam Ramnarayan Reddy, infrastructure and investments minister Ghanta Srinivasa Rao and Guntur Congress MPs were among the leaders who announced that they would take part in Thursday's meeting. Ghanta Srinivasa Rao said the future course of action of Seemandhra leaders would be decided at Thursday's meeting. The delegation led by T G Venkatesh returned to Hyderabad on Wednesday evening in order to be present at the meeting.
Meanwhile, city's Telangana-neutral ministers Danam Nagender and M Mukesh Goud on Wednesday urged the Centre to declare Hyderabad as a separate state. Medak MLA T Jayaprakash Reddy also extended support to the ministers even as the city police decided to beef up security in the state capital on Thursday which is also slated to see a short visit by President Pranab Mukherjee late in the afternoon.
