What would you rather the subjects hold in their hand?

LOL... now that you mention it, it does look odd. Maybe that was the 'trend' at the time. To get portraits done while holding something. Just like all my cousins who got married in the 80s were made to look together at the sun while posing for their wedding album pics.

Re: shah jahan pics
but what is he holding in his hands?
in the first pic. -- that's a mighty small goblet he is holding. unless he was drinking 50 yr. old glenfiddich on the patthar. but even for that it's small. i can't imagine he'd be drinking tea from a samovar in that vessel. tea? lowly tea? perhaps mughal miniatures are to be understood literally (considering that the cup is so small).
in the second pic -- what is that? a peacock feather? i would have imagined the emperors to hold a lion capital in their hands or wear the scalp of an elephant on their heads when posing for pictures. effeminate much.
in the third pic. -- cherry? cherries got introduced in shah jehan's time? but i see some green cherries in his plate too. is that really a cherry?

I think the Mughals were big on opposable thumbs. Jahangir and Shah Jahan were anticipating future discoveries in the field of evolutionary biology.Another Brick wrote:evvwwRyyyone in these pics is holding something in their hands as if to prove their hand is in working condition.

k, so the painter's expertize was to draw only profiles, and super expertize was to draw hands, and that's why he made them carry something.
Case closed.

hahaha @ 50 yr old glenfi on the patthar. and it indeed looks like the emperor was out picking cherries before he allowed the painter to draw his pic.
