Italian-Nadar connection Empty Italian-Nadar connection

It was mid eighties. No cell phones. It was not too easy to get a land line. We had a phone at home. It was in the drawing room. And we let the neighbors use it to make local calls. However, we requested they pay Rs. 1. It was just to make up for the losses created by people who make multiple calls when no one was watching.

There was a nadar guy who lived opposite to our house. He had an Italian wife. She and her friend had come to India for a visit a few years ago. I do not know under what circumstances she met the Nadar fellow. He married her and she chose to make India her home.

One day she came and said that she wanted to make a call. Ok permission granted. She left 1 rupee on the table after making the call. Of course no one was there to watch what she was doing.

Then came the bill from the telephone department for Rs. 500. She had called her home in Italy. Had to confront her to get the money.
