NEW DELHI: Is Boeing's brand new B-787 Dreamliner showing signs of "premature aging"? On Saturday, an Air India Dreamliner had to be grounded in Hong Kong after the actuator of its wing spoilers broke. A spoiler acts as a speed breaker on an aircraft and its actuators make it go up or down on wing tips during takeoff to alter drag and during landing to increase rate of descent. Without this important device perfectly functional, an airplane simply can't be allowed to get airborne. .......................

That news item is pretty damming. However for an aircraft of this type technological change, this may be expected. If the problems are quality related they could be fixed soon. However if they are deeper design issues then Boeing will have a real problem. So far Boeing stock price suggests most of the news is limited to quality issues.

It could also be the issue with new materials (new brands of plastics ec.) being used in these demanding applications (component / spoilers etc., made of new materials, exposed to extreme temperatures and weather conditions, e.g. very low atmospheric temp. along with rain and snow etc.).
