i learned something interesting about UP brahmins today from a colleague who happens to be a UP brahmin. UP brahmins comprise of sub-sects the largest of which are Kanyakubja and Saryupareen.

The fundamental difference between Saryupareen brahmins and Kanyakubja brahmins is that the former respect Lord Rama and consider Ravana to be a demon while the latter claim that Lord Rama does not deserve to be given excessive respect because he killed a brahmin (Ravana).

Needless to say this is hearsay and has to be verified.

Let the kanyakubjas be forewarned that they shall be clubbed with Ravan-worshiping atheists if they do come forward for this research.
