vinod khanna had the good looks and the robust body and fan following to become the next superstar replacing amitabh , but did not have the mental stability and discipline . he used to arrive on his sets late for shooting , unlike amitabh who was always punctual .

at the height of his popularity , vinod left stardom to join osho rajneesh in USA . so he sacrificed his career for mental peace---not a man cut out to be superstar . he wasted five prime years of his life in the rajanish ashram and temporarily abandoned his wife and kids . this caused his divorce with his wife , thus destroying his marital life....though he rebuilt it by marrying again .

when he came back , he got two back to back hit movies ( satyamev jayate and insaaf ) thus showing his star power . but then he began drinking heavily and arrive on sets drunk and in no condition to shoot---so he was removed from many films .

of course , in the seventies and early eighties he was a hugely bankable star and gave many hit movies . was an all rounder---could do both romance and action movies and also villain roles . acting capabilities were very decent .

always loved him for his charismatic personality on and off screen. That charm was also passed on to both his star sons. Love them too.
Don't care if he would have overthrown Amitabh or not, it's pure speculation. don't care if he was an excellent actor or not. His presence on screen always demanded rapt attention. You just wanted to keep looking at him. This can't be achieved by just good looks. Lots of aura goes in it. Was an interesting person, his osho stint and comeback made him even more so. I believe he was one of the last ones of that breed of old time charm.

I wasn't impressed...major problem, as majority of indian men have, is blank dead, lifeless eyes and added to that those dark circles/bags around , almost wondered about him doing drugs, balding hair, may be body building was one redeeming feature...sayin' all this is probably because i was a great fan of shatrughan sinha, his style, particularly his voice, and he just inhales vinodh khanna in mere apne...
