Northies - five day deewali , danteras, new accounting year, lax I puja, ram returning to .
South - two day deepawali , laxmi puja, naraka killed by satyabhama wife of Krishna
All India - fire crackers and lights one day
Feel free to wish and celebrate but remember India is a vast country with interpretations.

South celebrates Vijaya dasami for Durga and north celebrates the same for ravana death. Ram does not figure that much in south's dussehra.

Funny ain't?
Deepavali is the MOSTEST important festival for Hindus. But, most dont even know exactly why it is celebrated;
.... This great day is celebrated as Narak-Chaturdashi which falls in the festival of Diwali (the second important day of Diwali). Lord Krishna's victory on Narakasura translated into freedom for all his prisoners and honouring of Aditi. Having rescued the 16,100 women, Krishna married them to restore them of their honour in society due to being in captivity for a long time.
Alrightyyyyyy.... Lord Krishna beat Mahamad aka Dr. PBUH hands down.... saved the "honor" of 16,000.
Daym...still Wilt is the super winner

interesting. TBT, in the east too we celebrate vijaya dashami, not dusshera. same in west i think as far as emphasis goes.truthbetold wrote:South celebrates Vijaya dasami for Durga and north celebrates the same for ravana death. Ram does not figure that much in south's dussehra.

Re: Happy Diwali CH
random diwali musings, uff.
so we burst crackers in our yard i own nearby. my younger brother's kids accompanied us this time. we had done the puja in all places -- home, office, another office. lastly we did it in the yard office. i reclined in a chair in open space as younger, nephew, niece, wife got busy bursting patakas, crackers, in a secluded area under the cops' radar.
younger came up to me and said:
younger - papa, aren't you going to burst any crackers?
help - we have rangmashals (hand held torches)
younger (to help) -- are you crazy? what if the rangmashal bursts? *the sivakasi boys mischievously put a cracker in some rangmashals to surprise the users -- not their fault for boys will be boys*
me - ill fire a roman candle. *roman candle is a firework that bursts to the sky*
kids love their parents SO much. then, unfortunately, they grow up. they don't love you as much 'cos they aren't children anymore. you stop loving them too, 'cos they are not children anymore. random musings.
so i lit a roman candle and retreated to my chair. and i watched the spectacle of paper set to fire. a sheer waste of money and a havoc wreaked on the environment. my closest cousin in mumbai has stopped celebrating diwali (but his kids have all graduated). i am too old to change the world. i wish the rangoli was the end of diwali. mercifully in a few years my younger too will be gone and i can stop this nonsense.
on the way back, i told my niece that she had become too beautiful. you can see her in this pic. from 6 years ago: her pic
i told her in the car i wanted to take her snap in her diwali best, a kurti, and post to a discussion board. she said, "no problem tauji." so i am posting
my parents used to fire rangmashals from the verandhah of our home (we lived frugally then). that was their idea of romance -- both dressed in diwali best firing rangmashals together, hand in hand, after all festivities were over and when the world was asleep.
i saw many attractive women when we stepped into a temple on the way back. one had flawless, glowing skin. they were all doing parikramas and doing some obscure rituals and praying. i was filled with a lot of love. this is true diwali!

Re: Happy Diwali CH
my wife spent the evening celebrating goberdhan puja with my bhabhi with full gobar figure (yeech!) and annakut and kadhi chawal. i did not go. my wife no longer does this puja for her mil and fil are no longer around to support her. i think i have lost total touch with my roots and only the superficial engages me now. i think it is a good evolution.
